RICE AND THE MALAYSIAN CULTURE
Rice is deeply ingrained in Malaysian culture. Serving rice to family and guests is a form of welcome, acceptance, love and appreciation. The preparation of rice reflects an occasion, intention or situation. When in a rush for a meal, people often prepare Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice). To commemorate a joyous occasion, Nasi Minyak or Nasi Briyani is served as the main dish. Lauk, or main dishes, in a lot of our local cuisines are meant to be paired with rice. Rice is also the base ingredient for some dessert such as Tapai.

The term beras pun tak ada (there’s not even rice) described a devastating level of poverty within a household.
The importance of rice in the Asian culture is here to stay.
